“The Gītā is not asking us to worship a God sitting in the sky on a golden throne. Nor is it asking us to strive to attain heaven after we die. ‘How can you experience peace and happiness right now, right here?’ That is what Gītā is showing us. The Gītā helps us to realize our True Self.”
—Amma (Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi)
What is Bhagavad-Gītā?
The Bhagavad-Gītā is one of the most important texts in India’s ancient scriptural tradition. Within its 700 verses, we are presented with the very essence of the Vedic teaching in an accessible and concise form. In Amma’s own words, “The Bhagavad-Gītā presents us with the quintessence of the Vedas. The Vedas are as deep and expansive as the ocean. That said, ocean water cannot be readily used for drinking or bathing. Only when it is evaporated by the heat of the Sun, forms clouds, condenses, rains down and forms rivers, can it be used to quench one’s thirst. Similarly, the Bhagavad-Gītā is verily a distillation of the Vedas. It has flowed down to us like the Ganges through the grace of God. Miraculously, even though it is a distillation, it retains the depth and expansiveness of the original. Thus, it has become regarded as the very symbol of Sanātana Dharma.”
The wisdom of the Gītā wasn’t taught in a tranquil retreat far away from the tumult of the world, but in the middle of a battlefield moments before the onset of a great war. Fittingly, its guru—the avatāra Śrī Krishna—teaches us that spirituality is not something to be practiced away from the world and its problems, but is rather a change in understanding rooted in which we can move freely in this world unaffected by its chaos. The Gītā awakens us to the blissful truth of who we truly are, allowing us to move through all of life’s challenges and beyond, serenely, blissfully with a smile.
